Caring For Your Flowers

Asset 3

People are often curious about how to look after their newly-received flowers. Taking a bit of extra care, whether it’s for a single flower, a small bouquet, or a huge arrangement, can really make a huge impact. Generally, most flower displays will remain in top condition from 4 to 7 days, and even longer if they are given special attention. To make sure your floral gift looks its best, here are some great pointers!

For loose wrapped flower bunches

1. Start by trimming the stems of your flowers to a length of about 2 inches. This will help them absorb water more efficiently and allow them to stay fresh longer.

2. Remove any foliage that may be below the water line in your vase to avoid bacteria growth.

3. Make sure you use clean, cold water in your vase and add a flower food packet if available (or make your own with a teaspoon of sugar, a teaspoon of bleach, and 1/4 teaspoon of lemon juice).

4. Place the flowers in a cool area away from direct sunlight, heaters, air conditioners or drafts as these can all shorten their lifespan.

5. Change the water every 2-3 days and re-cut the stems at an angle each time for best results.

6. If you notice any wilting or browning petals on your flowers, remove them immediately as they can spread

Make sure you get rid of any leaves that are below the waterline, as they will just lead to bacterial growth and your flowers will not last as long. Do not forget to change out the water regularly – this is a major factor in keeping your flowers healthy. Additionally, be sure to include flower food if you’re using any, and check this daily. To make sure the stems draw in water instead of air, cut off the end of the stem while it’s submerged. Then, put the flowers in the vase you’ve prepared. Utilize a sharp knife or shears for thicker stems and branches. Keep the blooms in a cool space – between 65 and 72 degrees F – and make sure they don’t have any direct sunlight, as attractive as that may be.

You should be mindful to not position your flowers too close to any heating or cooling vents or beneath any ceiling fans, as the air circulation will cause them to dry out quickly. Additionally, you should be wary of placing flowers on top of any older appliances like TVs or radiators, as they may give off heat that will lead to the flowers dehydrating.
